Plant’s controlled singing and Page’s development of texture both distinguish this track, which to this day confounds critics who denigrate Zeppelin as a band schooled only in the art of excess.

Led Zeppelin — Trampled Under Foot Album Version (Physical Graffiti 1975). Led Zeppelin — Down By The Seaside (Physical Graffiti 1975) Tucked way at the very end of Physical Graffiti, “Sick Again” is nevertheless a corker of a band performance, pushed into overdrive by Jimmy Page’s slippery guitar and John Bonham’s merciless drum assault. Like its lyrics, in which Robert Plant takes pity (well, not that much pity) on the hordes of groupies that would nightly sacrifice themselves to their rock gods, the music leaves listeners clamoring for more.A quintessential Led Zeppelin hard rocker, “The Rover” matches a menacing Jimmy Page lick with John Bonham’s reliable pounding and John Paul Jones’ busy bass work, while Robert Plant muses about life on the road with one of the world’s most powerful touring machines. Seems simple, right? Well, it is, but only the greatest talents can turn simplicity into amazement, and that about sums up the enduring wonder that is Led Zeppelin. Although it contains no startling breakthroughs, it does afford an impressive overview of the band's skill. Naturally, Graffiti is not without faults — Zeppelin is too intuitive a band to cut a flawless album When you think of Physical Graffiti, “Kashmir” tends to be the first and last song that comes to mind. As colossal as the Zeppelin legacy itself, “Kashmir” captures all four band members at the peak of their talents: You have Jimmy Page's unconventional DADGAD tuning inspired by similar modal Arabian ones; Robert Plant's vivid impressions of his travels across Northern Africa; John Bonham's thunderous but meticulously planned percussion; and John Paul Jones' orchestral arrangement, both for real strings and his Mellotron. The final achievement is mesmerizing, majestic, mind-blowing. “Kashmir” remains an indestructible cornerstone of classic rock.
, because the band finally had The guitarist/composer/producer also noted that the fact that Physical Graffiti was the first release on Swan Song, Led Zeppelin's own label, was also particularly gratifying If Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones & John Bonham had been authors instead of musicians, this poster print shows how their immense 1975 album 'Physical Graffiti' might have turned out - as a collection of novels instead of songs. It's an ideal gift for any book-loving Led Zeppelin fan Led Zeppelin - 'Physical Graffiti' 1975 (Full Album HD) Fans can make a case for virtually every Led Zeppelin album’s incomparable greatness -- but only one represents the very pinnacle of the group’s career achievements: 1975's expansive, all-encompassing (and arguably all-eclipsing) double album Physical Graffiti. Everything Led Zeppelin ever were can be found here, and anything else that might have been is frankly not worth considering. So, as we celebrate this historic release's 40th anniversary, we dissect every one of its 15 tracks, from the merely stunning to the categorically perfect, knowing full well that we wouldn't want to imagine life without any of them.
He has always exhibited a studio musician’s knack for functionalism. Unlike many of his peers, he rarely overplays, especially on record (and Led Zeppelin has never indulged itself with a live LP). Most of his playing instead evidences the restraint and rounded style of his avowed influences: the brooding, involuted blues lines of Otis Rush, the finely filigreed acoustic form of Bert Jansch, the echoed, subliminally driving accompaniments of Scotty Moore (behind Elvis Presley) and James Burton (behind Ricky Nelson) on early rockabilly records. Page’s instrumental cohorts are John Paul Jones and John Bonham. Jones, another studio veteran, contributes keyboards as well as bass and is responsible, via his use of synthesizer, for bringing fullness as well as funk to the band. Bonham, on the other hand, is a steak-and-potatoes percussionist, handpicked, one assumes, for his ability to supply a plodding, stolid, rock-solid bottom — no one has ever accused Led Zeppelin of swinging.“Bron-Yr-Aur” returned listeners to the remote cottage nestled deep in the Welsh countryside where Jimmy Page and Robert Plant (whose parents owned it) composed the bulk of 1970’s Led Zeppelin III. And just as that landmark album provided a welcome creative departure in the group’s career, this spartan but strikingly beautiful acoustic performance by Page does for the predominantly electrified proceedings on Physical Graffiti. Physical Graffiti is the last great Led Zeppelin title, recorded before the influences of the day (synthesizers, disco) ended Zeppelin's reign as the kings of loud and sexy blues-metal. Playfully experimenting with new sounds, the band blended Middle Eastern rhythms, folk-stylings, heavy blues..
Naturally, Graffiti is not without faults — Zeppelin is too intuitive a band to cut a flawless album. Although Page and Bonham mount a bristling attack on “The Rover,” this track, like several others, suffers from Plant’s indefinite pitch. Other cuts, such as the ten-minute “Kashmir” and “In My Time of Dying,” succumb to monotony. “In the Light,” one of the album’s most ambitious efforts, similarly fizzles down the home stretch, although the problem here is not tedium but a fragmentary composition that never quite jells: When Page on the final release plays an ascending run intended to sound majestic, the effect is more stilted than stately. Led Zeppelin couldn't be contained by the standard audio formats of the early '70s. They had too many ideas, too many good songs, and no interest in If The White Album revolutionized the double LP — the idea of an album as a sprawling, singular piece, not just a song dump — then Physical Graffiti.. With Jimmy Page as its driving force, the song’s forceful musical bed (including a mildly dissonant counterpoint riff midway through) is perfectly suited to the lusty and uncensored sexual conquest of its lyrics.

The album’s — and the band’s — mainspring is Jimmy Page, guitarist extraordinaire. It was Page who formed Led Zeppelin in 1968, after the model of such guitar-oriented blues-rock units as Cream, the Jeff Beck Group and the Yardbirds, where Page, a former sessionman, had first come to prominence. And it is Page who continues to chart Zeppelin’s contemporary course, not only as the group’s lead guitarist, but also as the band’s producer. The best in culture from a cultural icon. Throughout the album, Page and the band tap a strange lot of sources, although the result is always pure Zeppelin. On “Ten Years Gone,” a progression recalling the Beatles’ “Dear Prudence” resolves in a beautifully waddling refrain, Page scooping broad and fuzzy chords behind Plant, who sounds a lot like Rod Stewart. Elsewhere, the band trundles out the Marrakech Symphony Orchestra (for “Kashmir”), Ian Stewart’s piano and even a mandolin (both for “Boogie with Stu”). Small matter: Jimmy Page could probably arrange a quartet for finger cymbals and have it come lumbering out of the loudspeakers sounding like Led Zeppelin. 2LP Led Zeppelin 'Physical Graffiti'. Led Zeppelin — Physical Graffiti (1975) In a virtual recapitulation of the group’s career, Physical Graffiti touches all the bases. There’s a blues (“In My Time of Dying”) and a cosmic-cum-heavy ballad (“In the Light”); there’s an acoustic interlude (“Bron-Y-Aur”) and lots of bludgeoning hard rock, still this band’s forte (“Houses of the Holy,” “The Wanton Song”); there are also hints of Bo Diddley (“Custard Pie”), Burt Bacharach (“Down by the Seaside”) and Kool and the Gang (“Trampled under Foot”). If nothing else, Physical Graffiti is a tour de force. Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti. By Roy Taylor. One of the most successful and influential groups of all time is back again with a new deluxe edition to mark the 40th anniversary of Physical Graffiti's original release on February 24, 1975. This latest project from the London rockers is creating enormous buzz.. At the absolute opposite end of the sonic spectrum from “The Wanton Song” (and thus representative of the turn-on-a-dime songwriting fearlessness that made Zeppelin so lovable), “Down by the Seaside” is a wistful fantasy awash in trembling guitars and bluesy electric piano breakdowns. And that’s before it briefly transforms into a completely different tune halfway through; like an instance of songwriting Jeckyll and Hyde, the likes of which kept Led Zeppelin fans ever on their toes. This may prove to be a rather contentious choice this low in the rankings of Physical Graffiti songs, but “Trampled Under Foot” is a singular cut in Zeppelin's canon, since John Paul Jones’ hypnotic funk-inspired Clavinet riff, rather than Jimmy Page’s guitar, drives it. Nevertheless, the tune has snagged more radio airplay than almost any other Physical Graffiti song, and is apparently one of Robert Plant’s favorites, to boot.
Even perfect albums have their weak links, and “Boogie With Stu” — named after Rolling Stones sideman Ian Stewart, who sat in on this tune — is one of Physical Graffiti's. The song has its fans, those who champion its melange of ‘50s rock, clack-clack percussion and Stewart’s boogie-woogie piano, but everyone else can hear why the track sat in the vaults since 1971.They’ve sparked riots from Boston to Milan, sold out concerts from Hong Kong to Hamburg. Each of their five previous albums has gone platinum, selling more than one million copies; one, Led Zeppelin (IV), has sold more than three million. They’ve set new records for U.S. concert attendance, drawing 56,800 to a single show in Tampa, Florida, in 1973 and 120,000 to six concerts in the New York area in 1975. On paper at least, Led Zeppelin is unquestionably the world’s most popular rock band.

The band wrote and recorded eight new songs for the album at Headley Grange, which stretched the total time of the record beyond the typical length of a single LP, so the band decided to make Physical Graffiti a double album by including unreleased tracks from earlier recording sessions: one outtake from Led Zeppelin III, three from Led Zeppelin IV, and three from Houses of the Holy, including the unused title track from the latter album. Physical Graffiti will likely also disappoint those who prefer their rock laced with lyrical significance: Led Zeppelin no more articulates a world view than Little Richard (or Cream) did. Yet while Zeppelin’s stature as cultural spokesmen can be questioned, their standing as rock musicians cannot. True, Led Zeppelin misses the swagger of the Stones, the kinetics of the Who. With all due respect to “Stairway to Heaven,” Led Zeppelin never crafted a more musically and emotionally satisfying power ballad than “Ten Years Gone.” With its brilliantly arranged contrasts of heavy and light, aching vocal performance by Robert Plant and panoramic sweep leading up to its final crescendo, this is a veritable songwriting clinic by the masters of the craft. Everything that should have been put in was, and everything that should have been left out was too. The end result is absolute perfection. Physical Graffiti is the sixth studio album by the English rock band Led Zeppelin, released as a double album on 24 February 1975 by their newly founded imprint label Swan Song Records. The band wrote and recorded eight new songs for the album at Headley Grange.. "Black Country Woman''s backstory is arguably more intriguing than the song itself, which was recorded in Mick Jagger’s backyard during the Houses of the Holy sessions, where it captured the sound of an airplane overhead, giving new meaning to the concept of field recordings. Lyrically, the song simply transplants a classic cheating-woman blues motif to Plant and Bonham’s origins in England’s “black country.”

Although Zeppelin at the outset hewed closely to the standard blues-rock format of the late Sixties, the band soon abandoned blues retreads to concentrate on their own brand of hard rock. The group’s first album, Led Zeppelin, already contained such departures as “Dazed and Confused,” a searing wall of sound that inspired a generation of heavy-metal rockers. “Communication Breakdown,” also on the first LP, showed off the uptempo side of the Zeppelin format, with Page unleashing a blizzard of choppy chords. The jerky meter and crude attack remain favorite devices of Page, who, like Leiber and Stoller with the Coasters, understands the art of contriving a raucous sound (consider “Rock & Roll,” Zeppelin’s other masterpiece of distilled freneticism).
Is the plan to re-launch the band's entire catalog in the digital age a little dicey Led Zeppelin II [Atlantic, 1969] The best of the wah-wah mannerist groups, so dirty they drool on demand. It's true that all the songs sound alike, but do we hold Physical Graffiti [Swan Song, 1975] I suppose a group whose specialty is excess should be proud to emerge from a double-LP in one piece Physical Graffiti only confirms Led Zeppelin’s preeminence among hard rockers. Although it contains no startling breakthroughs, it does afford an impressive overview of the band’s skill. On “Houses of the Holy,” Plant’s lyrics mesh perfectly with Page’s stuttering licks. Here again, the details are half the fun: Bonham kicks the cut along with a cowbell while the two final verses add what sounds like a squeaky chorus of “doit”s behind the vocal; Plant meanwhile is almost inaudibly overdubbed on the song’s central chorus, underlining the phrase “let the music be your master.” File:Led Zeppelin logo.svg.
